For many years, while I was teaching in North Carolina, we would take our fifth graders to Washington, DC. to learn about ou nation's history. During those very busy three days, we would walk nearly 21 miles, and try to see as much as possible during that time, especially the Smithsonian museums.

One year, as I was checking out the National Gallery of Art, one of our greatest treasures, I started paying attention to how the artists were using light and composition in their painting. This led Steven and me to go back and view these paintings in a whole new light (no pun intended). We were looking at what the past masters of painting could teach us to help us grow in our photography. In the next few blogs, I would like to share with you a few things we picked up doing this and how we were able to incorporate it into our photography.

The picture at the top was taken at the New York Public Library. It was post processed in Topaz Impressions to give it a painterly look.
