The fall plaid pillows are on the rocking chairs. The fall wreath is on the wall above the bench. The required yellow mums are sitting snuggly in the apple basket by the door. Our front porch is rocking autumn. So far, around our yard, the main color is still green. But, as Steven and I drive up the mountains around us, we can see that late September color starting in the sourwoods and wildflowers.

Two of my favorite fall flowers are asters and goldenrod, both cold weather tolerant perennials. These prolific plants bloom about the same time and their hues of purple and yellow-gold compliment each other well. The past few days, we have seen some truly beautiful displays of both.

A bit of trivia….the Michaelmas daisy that I was always reading about in British novels, is in reality an aster.

Autumn color has started on the ground floor and over the next week to a month will be moving up to the treetops.
